[TUT] Show portfolio on genesis theme

tut portfolio genesis
First, we need to download the wordpress  plugin Genesis Portfolio Pro from GitHub, installed it, and activated it here on our site. This plugin creates a portfolio custom post type that we can use to separate portfolio type content from other content, say, a blog post. Adding the specific post type isn't necessary for everyone. For instance, if you have a small number of items to highlight, it may be easier to just create a regular blog post and assign it to a portfolio or work samples category.
So we have this menu option for portfolio items and it looks extremely similar to the menu option for post. Both have the options to view all items, add a new item, and then add a type or category.
tut portfolio genesis
The fancy term for these types or categories is taxonomies. They're stored the exact same way in the WordPress database and a taxonomy is simply a way to group related post. For the portfolio post type, those taxonomies are called portfolio types. So let's view all portfolio items.I've already gone ahead and added some in. Within each portfolio post, I've just inserted a regular WordPress image gallery and set a featured image. Of course you could add some text content in here as well, just like a regular post.
tut portfolio genesis
Since the portfolio for this site is relatively small, I've opted not to assign it a portfolio type. Of course, go ahead and use them if it helps with the organization of your content. The last thing I wanna point out is archive settings. This is a cool feature as of Genesis 2.0 that lets you add a headline and an intro to your archives along with some other settings. You can even insert HTML markup in this area, as I've done. I've added a link and styled it with the CSS class button to give me a call to action button on the archive.
tut portfolio genesis
I can use this class because my theme comes with some built in styles for that button class. As a matter of fact, most Genesis child themes have that button class, so chances are good you can use it. If you use theme altitude from studio press, you can change class="clear button white". The way to check would be to look at your style.css file, and do a quick search to see if you see that button reference. So let's go ahead and take a look at my portfolio archive. I can do that by clicking this link right here. Though here you can see my headline and my intro text and my button, and this is a three column grid layout that shows off each portfolio item.
Now if you wanted to change the appearance of this page, say make it a four column grid, you'd need to make edits to your child theme CSS file to override the CSS coming from the plugin. To see the content of these portfolio posts, I can click through and see the images I've added there. Now that we have our portfolio, the last step is to add it to our navigation so that our site visitors can easily find that. I'm gonna go back to my main portfolio page, and grab this URL.
Then I'm gonna go edit my menu by going to the menus link. You can also get there from the back-end by going to Appearance menus. I'm gonna enter this URL, and call it portfolio and add it to menu. And the cool thing about these menus is you can drag and drop. I'm gonna put mine right here by the contact button. Let's go ahead and save it, and take a look. And there it is! All right! We've really done most of the heavy lifting. Now we're off to some finishing touches before we prepare this site for launch.

How to add custom menu on wordpress website

- Looking at my list of Pages, I now have all the pages I planned for in my site inventory. The problem is if I jump to the front page of my siteyou'll see there's no logical way of getting to those pages. Because this is a default WordPress install and I haven't done any kind of customization to it yet, I only have my site title and tagline, a Search box, and then a bunch of widgets on the right hand side here that don't really make any sense for this kind of site, and then the welcome page. So now that I've added all the content in I need to create a custom menu to allow people to quickly navigate where they want to go.
Provides an easy way to create all the menus you want and you can assign those menus to different places on your site, either with your theme or as widgets. What I'm gonna do is create one main menu and display that in the main menu location for the theme I'm using. To start I need to create the menu itself, and I'll do that by going to the WordPress toolbar, hovering over the site title and selecting Menus, or if I'm on the back end I can also go to Appearance, and select Menus. I'll start out by creating a new menu, I'll call it Main Menu.

Click Create Menu to create the menu itself. And then I need to add content to my menu. Here I'll go to View All and just select all the items, because this time I want to display all my pages. Click Add to Menu, and all my (mumbling) are added. Now when I add a menu like this I get an alphabetical menu where every item is equally weighted, so there's no sub-items, everything is just on the same level. I also get a menu item at the very top, which is the home link, so this would be the home page.
And you'll notice, since I'm using a page as a home page that You're Invited features at the top and at the bottom because it's a (mumbling). So I need to remove one of these. I'll start off by going to You're Invited down here, clicking the down arrow, and then going to Remove this menu item. Now I get to reorganize my menu to make it structurally the way I want to. I'll start with the home page, because that makes sense, and I also want to end with my Contact page, so I'll grab that and drag it to the bottom. Then I want to organize my content as follows,I'll start with Our Story, and then The Engagement Photos will go under Our Story, so I'll pull that to the right so it's clearly docked underneath.
Then I have my Guest Info, and under Guest Info I want Hotels and What to Wear. Then I have my Guestbook, my Registry, my RSVP link, and Contact. And maybe I actually want RSVP to appear right here at the top, so that once people who are invited go to the site, they'll see RSVP as the very top item. So now I have a menu structure I think makes sense. I can now scroll down, check under Theme locations where I want this menu to appear, which in my case is Primary Menu, and then click Save Menu.
Once the menu is saved I'll open the site in a separate tab, and you'll see now I have a menu. You're Invited, RSVP, Our Story with a drop down, Guest Info with a drop down, and then Guestbook, Registry, and Contact. And since this menu is dynamic I can now go in and change it. Let's say I want RSVP to be under Guest Info, I can just put it here. Maybe I want Guestbook to appear directly after Our Story, so I'll put it in here. And if I like this new layout, I simply click Save Menu again, go and reload the front page and you see the structure of the menu has changed.
This gives you full control and it means as your site evolves you could also add new items to the menu. So for example, once this couple has gotten married and they want to add up their wedding photos, they can simply create a new page with a new gallery with the wedding photos, and then go into the Menu, add a new menu item for the new wedding images, and then just add them in under Our Story. Pretty much as simple as it can get.

How to building a wedding website: Get link from google map

One of the great features of the web is our ability to pull in content from different sources and display them on one page. You can pull in images or video or audio or interactive content like maps which is what we're going to do right now. I've created this page called Guest Infothat will be displayed only to invited guests that has all the information about the wedding and the reception including times and locations. To make this page more useful, I want to add in Google Maps that point specifically at where we're going to go.
Here we have 3 pm: Ceremony at Carmel Point so I want to add a map for Carmel Point and then further down we have 5 pm: Reception at Casanova Restaurant so I also want to add a map for Casanova Restaurant. I can do that by pulling that content in from Google. Let me show you how to do just that, find a map on Google and pull it in to your WordPress pages or WordPress posts. First, I go to maps.google.com and from here I can make searches for either locations or addresses.
I'm going to search for Carmel Point. Here we have Carmel Point and now I want this map to go on my site. To start off, I need the code so I'll go down to the bottom right-hand corner of Google Maps and find this cogwheel and click on it. Then I'll click Share or embed map.

Here, I can get a Share link to share the link with my friends or I can get the Embed map which allows me to embed the map on my page. Now if I want to, I could use the customization features here but I'm not going to touch that because I'm going to do all this manually.
Instead, I'll just grab the IFrame code that you see here on this field. Just copy it out and I go edit my page. From here, I need to go to the Text editor so click on the Text tab up here in the top right-hand corner and find where I want to place the map. If I scroll down, you can see here we have < h3 > 3 pm: Ceremony at Carmel Point and next sentence, I want the map to display directly underneath that. Now, if I had just paste in the map exactly as I copied it out of Google right now and update my page and then go and view the page, you'll see it worksbut it doesn't work perfectly.
If I go and resize this window now, you'll see that as I resize it, the map doesn't stay centered and it gets, kind of, squished and weird and depending on the theme you're using, it might actually start spilling out on the right-hand side of your content. It's also way too big for me right now, I want to make it vertically smaller and then also make it properly responsive to my page. To do that, I'm going to go back and edit the page and find the code I just pasted in, it's right here, and at the very end of that code you'll see it says "width 600" which is 600 pixelsand "height 450" which would be 450 pixels.
What I'm going to do here is change the width to 100% instead. That would be 100% of the available space within the container the map is placed in or in this case, within the context of that page. I'll also change the height to 300 pixels because I think that's a good size for this particular map and click Update. Now, I can go back and view the page again, scroll down, the map is now much shorter and when I resize it, you'll notice that the map area stays centered as I scroll up and down.
If you have a theme that doesn't properly control IFrames the map wouldn't start spilling out over the sides. So the hundred percent trick always works better. Now that I've added the map for Carmel Point, I also want to add a map for the other location so I'll scroll down and find the address, so it says "5th Avenue between Mission and San Carlos "Carmel-by-the-Sea". I'll just go and paste that in and see if that gives me anything. And lo and behold it does.
I can go and click on the cogwheel again, Share or embed map, copy out the map location, go back and edit my page, scroll down until I find where I want to place this map, maybe I'll place this after the address. Again I'm going to change the width to 100% and the height to 300, update the page again, view the page and now when I scroll down, I have the map to Carmel Point and I have the map to the Casanova Restaurant.
You see, even though I just entered this general address, Google figured out what I was looking for and has added the information for the restaurant itself. This makes it easy for my visitors to get directions and know where to go and if they have a Google phone or use Google Maps on their devices, they'll be able to navigate directly to the different locations. I don't know about you but I think this is pretty awesome!
